Gut bacteria and inflammatory bowel disease: a new frontier in treatment - EurekAlert


<p>This review expands on previously published reviews describing how specific types of dietary fibers (prebiotics) influence gut bacteria in IBD. While existing IBD medications focus on inflammation, mounting evidence supports the use of prebiotics. Prebiotics selectively promote beneficial gut bacteria, potentially improving IBD symptoms. Researchers compared different studies of prebiotics in animal models. They&nbsp;found positive effects, but human studies&nbsp;demonstrated variable results dependent on personalized microbiota, demonstrating beneficial effects only in select IBD patients.</p>
