Gigahertz-rate switchable wavefront shaping by LNOI-empowered metasurface - EurekAlert

Research published in Advanced Photonics showcases a pioneering integration of metasurfaces, lithium-niobate-on-insulator (LNOI) photonic waveguides, and electrodes within a photonic integrated circuit (PIC). This novel approach enables ultra-highspeed wavefront shaping of light. By applying electric signals to the integrated device, researchers demonstrated real-time control over wavefronts, polarization states, focal positions, and orbital angular momentum of light beams. The system exhibits modulation speeds up to 1.4 gigahertz, with potential for optimization to achieve speeds in the hundreds of gigahertz range. This advancement opens doors for applications in optical communication, computation, sensing, and imaging, marking a significant step towards practical high-speed photonic technologies.
