With VECSELs towards the quantum internet - EurekAlert

Connecting quantum computers and increasing their performance, encrypting communication channels in a tap-proof manner or synchronizing atomic clocks in order to carry out highly accurate time measurements for satellite navigation or scientific experiments: The quantum internet promises significant improvements in various key technological areas. However, in order to implement the quantum internet in the existing fiber optic network, quantum frequency converters are required that can adapt the wavelength of photons to the telecom band (1550 nm). Fraunhofer IAF has developed single-mode GaSb VECSELs with best-in-class output powers of up to 2.4 W, which enable quantum frequency conversion as a low-noise pump source.
