Tiny tropical puddle frogs show that protecting genetic variation is essential for animals to survive the climate crisis - EurekAlert

The climate crisis is changing habitats quickly, forcing animals to adapt to catch up. Populations of a species that have more genetic variation have lower genomic vulnerability: there’s a higher chance that there’s a variant somewhere in the population which allows individuals carrying it to cope with the new conditions. Scientists studying the central African puddle frog found that highly varied environments are very important for driving genetic variation and lowering genomic vulnerability, suggesting that preserving these habitats could boost conservation efforts in the face of climate change.
