The last trick of p53: early 3D chromatin remodelling to trigger cellular stress response - EurekAlert

Researchers from the 3D chromatin organization lab at the Josep Carreras Institute reported last week a novel and unforeseen capacity of p53, one of the oldest and best-known human tumour suppressor genes. Using state-of-the-art methodologies, the team discovered that p53 activation triggers a fast cohesin-dependent remodelling of the cell’s chromatin leading to the activation of its target genes through long-range enhancer-promoter interactions. The study identified 340 genes directly regulated by p53, with 74% of these genes not previously identified that could serve as therapeutic targets in the future.
