Terahertz metamaterials for free-space and on - EurekAlert

Active metamaterials are one of the most important ways to promote the practical use of metamaterials. This paper focuses on the terahertz band, which has great potential for future applications in wireless communication, imaging and sensing, and focuses on summarizing the research progress of active modulation based on composite metamaterials (hybrid metamaterials), introducing several basic working mechanisms, related device performance indexes, developmental overviews, and technological bottlenecks, etc., so as to provide readers with references for understanding the technical principles and carrying out the related researches. At present, the application of active metamaterials is mainly for free-space terahertz wave modulation, while on-chip information transmission will further help device miniaturization and enhance device integration. Terahertz waveguides based on topological photonics are expected to solve the problem of on-chip transmission efficiency, and the second part of this paper also focuses on the current hot research direction - topological photonics, respectively, from the basic principles, several typical types of topological photonic crystals, and the progress of terahertz applications in three aspects.
