Suicidal behaviors increased by over 50% in Catalonia after the COVID-19 pandemic - EurekAlert

A study by the Sant Pau Research Institute, published in The Lancet Psychiatry, reveals a significant increase in non-lethal suicidal behaviors following the COVID-19 lockdown in Catalonia, highlighting the prolonged impact of the pandemic on the mental health of the population. • According to the research, led by Dr. Víctor Serrano-Gimeno, from the Mental Health Research Group of the Sant Pau Research Institute, non-lethal suicidal behaviors increased by 50.77% after the lockdown in Catalonia, especially among young women and minors. The study results show a slight increase trend in non-lethal suicidal behaviors during the COVID-19 pandemic in Catalonia, followed by a reduction during the lockdown and a significant increase afterward. Experts from Sant Pau emphasize the need to design specific preventive strategies in response to the observed increase in non-lethal suicidal behaviors after the lockdown, underscoring the importance of considering mental health as an essential part of public health in future similar situations.
