SMART researchers pioneer production of CAR T-cells using high-density microfluidic bioreactor - EurekAlert


Researchers from the Critical Analytics for Manufacturing Personalized-medicine (CAMP) Interdisciplinary Research Group (IRG) at Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART), MIT’s research enterprise in Singapore, have achieved a significant breakthrough. They have developed a novel method capable of producing clinical doses of viable autologous chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cells in an ultra-small automated closed-system microfluidic chip, roughly the size of a pack of cards.  This breakthrough method advances the efficiency of CAR T-cell production while reducing resource consumption, which could potentially make autologous cell therapy manufacturing more affordable and feasible for point-of-care settings such as hospitals and wards. Importantly, CAR T-cells produced using this method have demonstrated comparable effectiveness to those produced via conventional methods, despite shorter production and culture periods in the microbioreactor.
