Small adaptation helps lemurs make a big noise - EurekAlert

Lemurs, the small primates native to Madagascar, can exaggerate their size thanks to the unique structure of their larynx. The study, published in the journal Scientific Reports, is the first to show that different species of lemurs possess a feature unlike any other primate – an additional pair of vocal folds in the larynx – and demonstrate its function. The researchers believe it helps increase the variety and efficiency of calls, and also lowers the frequency of calls, making the lemur sound larger than it is.
