Scientists invent method to transform near-unbreakable plastic into biodegradable polyester - EurekAlert

Polyethylene is the most important and widely used plastic in the world and it is used in a wide range of consumer plastics. It is also incredibly difficult to break down in nature. A new research project aims to enable the recycling and upcycling of polyethylene by converting it into biodegradable polyester through a three stage chemical and biological process. The project is funded by the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon Europe.
