1814 - Joseph Fraunhofer, a German lens-maker and optical scientist, has become the world's finest craftsman in optical glass. He is testing a new and especially fine prism by shining sunlight through it when he notices, to his astonishment, that the spectrum of the sun (the rainbow produced when white light is passed through a prism) is not continuous! It is divided by dozens of fine black lines.
