Initiate your own observer community to start insect counting with InsectsCount - EurekAlert
Pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hoverflies are crucial for plant reproduction, food production, and biodiversity, but their decline threatens global food security. To address this, the EU-funded project SHOWCASE developed the InsectsCount app, which encourages standardized insect counting efforts. This progressive web application (PWA) prioritizes community participation and regional coordination, allowing users to collect and share data on insect populations. Coordinators play a key role in organising observers and motivating engagement, while innovative gamification elements enhance user involvement. Through the app, users can join experimental biodiversity areas (EBAs) to collaborate on biodiversity innovations and contribute to sustainability in agriculture. Overall, the InsectsCount app represents a pioneering approach to pollinator monitoring, combining community participation with gamification to promote collective action for insect conservation.
