Hepatitis B virus core protein as a Rab-GAP suppressor driving liver disease progression - EurekAlert
It is generally believed that HBV is not directly cytopathic in infected hepatocytes. However, in cells under oxidative stress, HBV core protein (HBc) perturbs mitochondrial dynamics and prevents cellular recycling of damaged mitochondria, thereby driving liver disease progression. The present study highlights an unexpected cytopathic role of HBc, making it a pivotal target for treatment of HBV-associated liver disease.
