GMO space lettuce could save astronauts’ bones. Researchers tweaked the plant’s genome so it produces parathyroid hormone (PTH), which stimulates bone growth and is already used in an FDA-approved drug. The work is a first step toward using plants to make all sorts of pharmaceuticals for astronauts.
