Diabetes increases the risk of failure in spinal fusion procedures - EurekAlert


A study of more than 500 individuals who underwent spinal fusion surgery at the same medical center found patients with diabeites were nearly three times more likely to experience non-union complications and more than twice as likely to experience additional degeneration in adjacent segments of the spine after the procedure. The reason, researchers from The University of Toledo say, appears to be linked to how diabetes affects bone growth and healing.
