DeepEvo: An “intelligent” strategy for engineering customized proteins - EurekAlert

Proteins engineered for desirable characteristics have wide-ranging applications, from scientific research to lifestyle interventions. However, the existing methods for protein engineering are inefficient. To overcome the labor-intensive nature of conventional protein engineering processes, researchers from China developed a deep evolution strategy called “DeepEvo” that uses artificial intelligence, combining principles from deep learning and evolutionary biology. On applying DeepEvo on a model enzyme, the researchers could successfully engineer high-temperature tolerant variants, demonstrating the strategy’s efficiency.
