Climate change-induced amplification of extreme temperatures in large lakes


The world’s largest freshwater bodies have experienced a 20-60% increase in lake surface temperature extremes over the past 50 years, with heatwave and cold-spell intensities more than doubling after 1996 or 1976, according to a hydrodynamic-ice model driven by climate data.
