Children with down syndrome are disproportionally impacted by sleep apnea and conventional treatments are often ineffective. A new case report shows that a 4-year-old boy who underwent a treatment called hypoglossal nerve stimulation and experienced great results afterwards. The treatment acts like a pacemaker for the tongue and opens the airway before it obstructs during sleep. A previous Mass General Brigham clinical trial found the treatment safe and effective in adolescents, and the researchers hope this new case shows this treatemnt could be an effective intervention at younger ages.
