CARM1 drives triple-negative breast cancer progression by coordinating with HIF1A - EurekAlert

This study investigates the role of Coactivator-associated arginine methyltransferase 1 (CARM1) in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). CARM1, known for its role in ERα-positive breast cancer, is found to promote proliferation, epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), and stemness in TNBC. CARM1 is upregulated in various cancers and correlates with breast cancer progression. The study reveals that CARM1 is recruited by hypoxia-inducible factor-1 subunit alpha (HIF1A) to modulate critical genes involved in cell cycle and signaling pathways, thereby facilitating TNBC proliferation and invasion. Ellagic acid, a CARM1 inhibitor, shows potential in suppressing TNBC by inhibiting CDK4 expression.
