Artificial intelligence helps scientists engineer plants to fight climate change - EurekAlert

Salk scientists apply Salk Fellow Talmo Pereira's artificial intelligence (AI) software, SLEAP, to analyze plant root systems, laying out a protocol that can be applied to gather data on crop and model plant phenotypes (physical characteristics) more efficiently and with equal or greater accuracy than existing methods. The scientists will use SLEAP to accelerate Salk's Harnessing Plants Initiative's plan to design carbon-capturing climate-fighting plants, and the team has already discussed using the tool to study plants in space with NASA.
