25 years of massive fusion energy experiment data completely open on the “cloud”, to be available to everyone - EurekAlert

►The National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS) has been strongly promoting the openness in research data, and all the accumulated data through the past 25 years of operation of the Large Helical Device (LHD) fusion plasma experiments have been made fully open to the public on Amazon Web Services (AWS), with the support of the “AWS Open Data Sponsorship Program”. ►About 17 million clusters of raw data (about 1.5 petabytes in archived size) acquired from the LHD experiments have been made freely available to the public since April 2024. An additional 24 million analytical result data will be also open on the same cloud storage, Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3), soon. ►This is the first time in the world of fusion research that all experiment data have been made publicly open, making the newest research data available to anyone via the Internet. It is a major step toward making fusion energy research an “Open Science.”
