Constrained cosmological simulations reveal that the mass distribution around the Local Group is strongly concentrated in a plane out to 10 Mpc. This "Local Sheet" geometry reconciles dynamic mass estimates with the observed quietness of the local Hubble flow.
Although our nearest neighbour, the Andromeda galaxy, is falling towards us, slightly more distant galaxies all move away with the cosmic expansion because they are being pulled by a giant dark matter sheet.
